As has become tradition at this point: O ne comes in to warm up and dry by the fire, then we swap with the one momma’s been working on, make sure they’re nursing, try to get some sleep.

Does having them away from mom cause problems?

Not if we’re quick about it. Mom’s willing to accept lambs that smell right for a few hours after giving birth. They’ll only very rarell y reject one that was taken away for a 1/2 hour or so. When it’s this cold the benefits of getting them really dry are very much worth the small risk .

Girls, actually. We’ve only got one ram out of six so far.

Are girls better than guys? Let you grow the flock? Are girls better suited for woo l production?

No difference between boys and girls on the wool front, (wierdly rams often seem to stay cleaner than ewes, but the wool is of id entical qality) but the flock growth bit is dead on. The more ewes we have, we can pick the best ones from the bunch to keep and breed to grow the flock.

Yup. Anything above about 20°F (-6°C) and they’re pretty much good to go, unless there are complications. Lambs are quite resilient little critters.

Usually we would, but it has been much colder and windier than normal
